Learn the different type of boiler systems
Choosing the right type of boiler system for your home can be confusing. Its always best to get a professional to survey the property before you purchase anything. We have put together the information below to help you understand the different types of boiler systems available.
Combi Boiler
Combination Boilers
Combination boilers are becoming the most popular choice of heating system within the UK as they require the least amount of space and are more efficient then ever before. Combination boilers heat your home and provide instantaneous hot water as and when you need it, they don’t require any additional tanks in the loft or separate pumps and valves, everything is self contained within the boiler, thus saving room and installation cost. Having your heating and hot water supplied from the same appliance is efficient and space saving but also comes with the risk of loosing both if your boiler breaks down. Combination boilers are good for small to medium sized homes depending on usage, if installed in an unsuitable type of property this can lead to pressure problems when used simultaneously.

 Advantages
Instantaneous Hot Water
Space Saving
Highly Efficient
Cost Effective
Disadvantages:
Not efficient for larger homes
No Hot Water storage
System Boiler
System Boilers
The system boiler set up requires a system boiler which feeds hot water to an unvented hot water cylinder, the most common systems used in the UK are the Heatrae Sadia Megaflo. This set up is effective as the cylinder is mains fed so the hot water pressure is good, plus the system boiler set up doesn’t require any tanks and the hot water cylinders can also be stored in garages or lofts. This system requires a minimum flow rate of 22 litres per minute to operate and the initial cost of this system is higher than a standard combination boiler, but its suitable for larger homes and a bigger system overall.

 Advantages
Hot water storage.
Suitable for larger homes.
No loft tank required
Good Hot water pressure
Disadvantages
No instantaneous hot water
Requires good pressure rate.
Higher installation price
Conventional / Traditional Boiler
Conventional Boilers
Conventional boiler systems tend to be found in older properties. These gas central heating systems usually comprise of a heat only boiler, a copper hot water cylinder, a cold water storage tank and a Feed and Expansion tank. Typically the mains water supply feeds into both of these tanks and the kitchen sink cold tap only. Conventional boiler system maintain a good pressure and do not suffer the pressure drops that combination boiler sometimes experience because the heated water is stored in a tank. This type of set up requires a lot of space to accommodate all the parts of the system, which can be quite extensive. Alsorunning costs for these systems can be relatively large and uneconomical.

Advantages
Maintains good pressure
Does Not experience pressure drops
Can be used with low mains pressure
DisadvantagesÂ
Older system overall
Not as effective
Higher running costs
